The Moraitis was established over 55 years ago as a Sydney based potato distribution business when potatoes arrived in bulk ocean shipments from Tasmania.
Formed by Nicholas Moraitis, the company today is still more than ever focused and driven by the principles in which it was founded.
Nicholas Moraitis, the man with the vision for Moraitis, began by delivering 75kg bags of potatoes to various shops throughout Sydney many years ago. With no forklifts to unload his truck, deliveries were done by hand, the task was arduous but Nicholas never lost the burning vision and passion to achieve his current business empire.
As the supply base developed geographically and more hard produce items were added to the portfolio, the Group evolved into a wholesale market- based business.
Along with the success of the Group at this time Nicholas’ sons Stephen and Paul stepped into the business and helped grow the business to what it is today.
Stephen’s involvement in the business started while at school when he worked with his father part-time after school and during school holidays. It didn’t take Stephen long to decide that he wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps and join the family business, which he did in 1979. Stephen progressed through all facets of the company and is now a director, managing the Group's Sydney Markets Wholesale operations. Not long after Stephen his brother Paul also made the important decision to join the family business in 1982. His appointment to a production and administration management role was followed by sales and marketing in 1986. With the contribution of Nicholas’s sons the business has grown and developed into Australia’s leading fresh produce company. Today both Stephen and Paul are directors of the Moraitis Group and oversee all facets of the business.
With characteristic vision, Nicholas Moraitis was among the first to recognise the future importance of supermarkets in Australia and he pioneered pre-pack consumer solutions with major factory investments.
As the Group continued to grow and expand, Moraitis began to open divisions on the east coast of Australia giving Moraitis the unequalled ability to supply the very best in quality fresh produce to the countries leading supermarkets, fruit markets, food service and national restaurant chains.
Following many recent acquisitions and expansions, Moraitis now has National distribution capabilities and is located Australia wide.
As Moraitis continued to expand, there was an opportunity to introduce a partner that could assist the business in achieving further strategic objectives. As a result Catalyst Investment Managers, a major Australian private equity firm invested in Moraitis in 2006 with the objective to establish a professional board for driving process and culture enhancements as well as unlocking the equity for funding strategic growth.
Moraitis are the Leaders in Fresh Produce and will continue to prepare for the demands of the future and set the standard for others within the fresh produce industry. Moraitis look forward to the future success of the company by maintaining constant growth and adopting new strategies for the benefit of the Australian fresh produce industry.
