The Process Of Rehabilitation For Athletes

For some of us, sport and other extracurricular activities play a large role in our lives. Not only are they played for recreational purposes, but sports also provide great fitness, stamina and above all an overall healthy wellbeing. While we are able to reap multiple benefits from engaging in sports, there are downsides as well. Injuries are part and parcel of playing any sport. Whether it be just pulling a muscle and getting a cramp or even breaking an entire bone, some of these injuries are more or less hard to avoid. Rehabilitation is a perfect way to help athletes who are prone to these injuries, get rid of their ailments in the fastest way possible.

Identification

The first step to knowing whether you actually need to go through the process of rehabilitation starts by recognising the problem. If you feel a slight pain in any part of your body after a rigorous sports activity, it’s always best to take a break and let that area heal. The problem only arises after the pain is prolonged over a period of time. This is when it’s time to get yourself checked by a physiotherapist. The physiotherapist will determine what the best course of action would be, depending on the severity of the injury. However, if you immediately gain a severe and unbearable injury after sports practice, it’s always best to go to a physio as soon as possible to run diagnostics on it.

Process

If the injury you have sustained is serious, chances are you’ll be out of training for a period of time depending on the severity of the situation, and you will immediately begin therapeutic treatment. During the rehabilitation process, you will be subject to many therapeutic massages which not only relax the muscles in the injured area but also help the blood circulation. You will also have to conduct certain light exercises such as stretching and light bike riding to ensure that you stay in top shape throughout the treatment. Most physiotherapy centres are equipped with relevant gymnasiums to help athletes in their rehabilitation journey. You can expect most of your time to be spent in these rehab centres if you want to get back on the field as soon as possible.

Recovery

After your time at rehabilitation is over, it does not mean that you can immediately get back to playing sports at full force. Your physiotherapist will mostly advise you against it. This is because even though your injury may be partly healed, there’s a good chance you may aggravate it if you start playing too soon. It’s best you always start by exercising with some light drills and stretching exercising. You may want to focus more on the injured are (but too much) to help the muscles to be strengthened in that particular area.
