What You Need To Know About Braces

If you’re thinking about getting braces, this article will help you as we’ll be going through everything you need to know. If interested, keep reading.

They’re Expensive

When you go to the orthodontics clinic, you’ll realize that getting braces can be very costly. This is as you’ll have to get the braces made especially for your mouth. Not just this, but you’ll have to regularly visit the dentist to monitor how your braces are doing which will additionally cost you money.

In the long run, this can be very expensive, especially if you have them on for many years.

You Can Wear Them for a Long Time

As mentioned, you can wear braces for a very long time. This is as it has to work with your teeth, bringing it to shape. If your teeth are misaligned heavily, it’ll be hard for your braces to do their job, which is why you’ll be wearing them for a long time.

Most of the time, they take 2 years to do their job. However, extensive cases require you to wear them for at least 5-10 years.

They’re Permanent

As you may know, once you have braces on you can’t take them off. You’ll be stuck with them for as long as they’re in your mouth, making you have to eat and sleep in them.

They’re Difficult to Speak With

When you first get braces, you’ll be in pain as they hurt a lot. Your mouth has to learn to react to the metal that’s in it which would take at least a week. So until then, it’ll be very difficult for you to speak and you’ll feel swollen.

Once your mouth gets used to them, it won’t be as difficult for you to speak with but as the braces alter the alignment of teeth, you may get a lisp as you’re not used to speaking with your teeth in such a position.

Braces Hurt

The fact of the matter is, braces hurt. When you first get them, you’ll be in a world of pain. This is as the brackets have a metal wire rung around them. The wire is there to tighten your jaw, applying pressure to misaligned teeth to bring it to shape.

Such pressure is uncomfortable and it’s unbearable if you’re getting braces for the first time as you won’t be able to eat until the pressure wears off.

What’s worse about this is, you’ll have to get the wires tightened often as otherwise, and your jaw would get used to the pressure, not altering your teeth. So, expect to get your wires tightened at least once a month, if not more.

It’s Never Over

Once you take the braces off you’ll be a totally different person as your smile has been fixed.  Although full of confidence, you must know you’ll have to wear retainers for the rest of your life.

Retainers are plastic cases that keep your teeth in place, not allowing them to drift to their earlier position.

As you can see, there are many things to be aware of before you take the leap and get your hands on some braces.
