It’s Just A Bad Day, Not A Bad Life

Mental health can be defined as a person’s emotional, psychological and social wellbeing. How we think, feel and act determines how we handle stress, relate to others and make choices. In the recent past the topic of mental health has begun to spark controversy.

Each person has been entitled to their own opinions on the effects of it, the reasons why and remedies to help cope. In this article we focus on 5 aspects of how mental health can be challenged, with possible coping mechanisms for each of them.

Depression

The most common and treatable symptom of a lapse in mental health can be identified as depression. Regardless of age, job or background depression has at some stage affected each one of us. The only difference is that some have the ability to fight it on their own and some need help.

Wherever you are in the world looking up local group therapy sessions can be a start. There is no shame in admitting when you need help, therefore group therapy in Elsternwick is a good idea if you need help but dislike being the centre focus of individual therapy sessions.

Thoughts of suicide

Another taboo subject in our society yet a mental condition that is hitting an alarming rate of deaths is suicide or suicidal thoughts. The reasons for this differ from person to person and affect people from countless walks of life.

It is important to identify what triggers these thoughts and finding someone you can talk to. The fear of being criticized and being labelled as mentally sick have resulted in more people afraid to admit their issues.

Anxiety/ panic attacks

The feeling of not being in control or overwhelmed with your surroundings may result in an anxiety or panic attack. This too is common and tends to interrupt carrying out daily tasks. The severity may wary but can also be helped through therapy sessions and medication.

Mental exhaustion

Overworked, unhealthy amount of expectations or the general stress that we are prone to can lead to mental exhaustion. Similar to a burn out this is a stage where your brain lacks the ability to function and carrying out small tasks can be difficult. Along with therapy, a complete shut off from the daily routine and change of scenery may help.

Guilt

The undying need to please or guilt that we couldn’t achieve something can take a toll on our health. The only remedy for this is to accept that we are human and there will be situations in life that are not in our control. Satisfying everyone is not a possibility but only a mere luxury.

The causes or stages of mental health are endless and are experienced in different ways. In conclusion the only way to overcome the struggle is to communicate and not be afraid to ask for help. “They cannot save you if they do not know you need support. Ask for help and live to battle another day”- unknown.
